Illegal Casinos in Singapore Get Government Regulation

Sept. 12-06

Peter Velappan, of the Asian Football Confederation is taking a very novel approach to the challenges presented by match-fixing in the country of Singapore. Rather than placing harsher restrictions on gambling, Veleppan has the notion that legalization of gambling would allow it to be monitored and regulated far more effectively by the government.

Sports betting practices are surging all over the world, and in the "far west" the general attitude seems to be on of complete prohibition. Online casino companies based off shore of the continental United States are being met with heavy resistance. The arrests of two sports betting internet gambling moguls has owners of online casinos all over the world afraid to set foot on U.S. soil.

Western, or rather American practices, are not shared by the Peter Veleppan and his many supporters in Singapore who agree with him that there should be regulation rather than prohibition when it comes to sports betting both in the real and virtual worlds.

Game fixing among various sporting events have been come a bone of contention among governments in Southeast Asia. The regional cock fights and dice rolling of yester-year have become a nostalgic memory when compared to the level of corruption faced today concerning sporting events.

Veleppan believes Singapore's acceptance and embracing of casino gambling involving sport, will serve as an example to neighboring countries with similar issues. "We have seen football corruption in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam in the past" said Veleppan while visiting Singapore to ascertain the amount of illegal gambling practices taking place there. He went on to say that the AFC approves of the means by which he wishes to eliminate corruption

The U.S. government is currently having similar trouble with corruption among online casino companies and the current method of restriction has not yet yielded the desirable result. It will be interesting to see the development of Singapore's approach within the upcoming months, perhaps it may shed light on possible alternatives for US business practices with online casinos.
