Executive Posts Bail
Sept. 14-06
The
Executive Chairman of Sportingbet, an online casino geared toward
sports betting, has quit his position today because of charges
that lead to his arrest on US soil earlier this month
Peter
Dicks turned in his resignation as a way to deflect the attention
away from the company that he helped to found. the online casino
industry is experiencing a large amount of scrutiny with the
arrest of two influential sports betting companies who operate
primarily over seas.
Sportingbet accepted Dick's resignation but did not give a
statement as to their stance in support of the former CEO of the
online casino company.
The 64
year old Peter was permitted to return to his home in the UK
pending trial in the United States. Dicks will be required to
returned to the US on September 28 to be present at the first
hearing of his prosecution.
Dicks
was arrested earlier this month on a warrant issued in Louisiana.
When the online casino owner reached New York he was arrested on
charges involving his sports betting online company.
He was
bailed for $50,000 and appeared in court today when he was given
the go-ahead to return to the UK to await trial.
Bail
was set for Mr. Dicks at $50,000, which he paid so that he may
return to England prior to be tried in America.
Peter
is being brought up on criminal charges in accordance with the
1961 Wire Act which the sports betting violates because it places
bets via telephone lines in the United States.
The
law is being loosely interpreted considering the means by which
one could access online casino sites that do not utilize phone
lines.
Dick's
arrest will no doubt open up litigation in several arenas
concerning online gambling
