Korean Online Casinos
Are on the Chopping Block
Sept. 14-06
The Korean government is becoming
extremely proactive in shutting down online casino sites. The
country is concerned about the operation of internet casinos that
use the Korean language and have operations based in foreign
countries.
The MIC, Ministry of Information and
Communication said yesterday has reported imposed blocks of over
50 online casino sites this month that fit the description. The
government will continue to impose blocks as these "problems"
arise.
Many online gambling operators feel
that the targeting of the casino sites is a biased government
practice. The online casino industry make up nearly 30% of the
foreign gambling sites banned by the ministry this year.
The Korean government has been
relentless in their quest to snuff out these online casino sites
and have even gone so far as to chase after operators who flee
Korean soil. Online companies that set up shop over seas are in no
less than operators found conducting business in Korea.
Korean law makers have set measures
into place to deny broadband access to Korean internet casinos,
there by cutting them off completely from the medium by which they
derive business.
This crack down has been accelerated by last months
events concerning illegal payout rates in the Pada Iyagi video
slots. This slot-machines were removed from their
respective casino floors and
the owners were brought up on charges.
Korean official have become more
offensive in order to reduce the amount of victims affected by
illegal gaming practices. The government does not wish to wait fro
a criminal activity to occur before they take action and therefore
have taken a preventative stance against the online casino
industry
The government is not concerned with
sites that are operated in the US because they claim that those
internet gambling sites are not geared toward Koreans and there
fore out of their jurisdiction. However, all online casinos that
produce Korean patrons are under a watchful eye
