Ohio Is Pushing for
Casino Issue on the November Ballot
The
casino initiative in Columbus Ohio has fall shy if the number of
signatures the proposals needs to move forward. The shortage,
although very discouraging for gambling supports, does not spell
the end for the proposed casino expansion. The initiative will be
allowed ten days to bolter the amount of support needed in order
to move forward.
The
Assistant Secretary of Monty Lobb has certified 314,183 of the
campaign's signatures, this is over 8,000 fewer than is needed to
move toward qualification on the November Ballot. The ten day
extensions has been granted so those who are for the casino
expansion will have the opportunity to make up for the difference.
The
campaign for casino expansion has been dibbed "Learn and Earn" as
an effort to point t the benefits that the casino revenue will
have on funding education. It spokesperson is Robin Hepler whose
confidence in the eventual success of the signature hunt is only
matched by her resolve to prevent a tax raise in Columbus. Robin
believes that the number of signatures needed will be amassed by
the end of the week.
Hepler
claims that the decision to re-enter the public with the petitions
as already been met with overwhelmingly positive responses from
the community. The campaign, if successful will allow casinos to
be constructed in the Columbus area.
Even
those who do not support casino expansion in Ohio are relatively
certain that the issue will make the ballot. David Zanotti, who
represents one of the many who oppose the gambling initiative,
expressed his fears of the Casino issue making the November
ballot. "They've got an extra $100,000 to burn, so they'll make it
up in a day or two," said Zanotti, who believes that the main
player in this issue is money.
He said
the opposition campaign will also be building momentum in the next
two weeks.
Supports
of the casino construction have the influence of parents. Hepler
often mentions the possibility for scholarship opportunities that
would be possible asking for a community member's signature.
However, her opponents make it clear that although the money could
be used for a good cause, in their opinion it comes from a bad
source.
