Church Officials in Ohio Oppose Casino Expansion

Sept. 27-06

Proposed casino expansion in Ohio is causing trouble of Biblical proportion. A coalition of Christian clergy are banning together in order to prevent the further spread of casino gambling in the state. The group plans to display yard signs and campaign from door to door so that their message may be heard.

The clergy, in addition to their secular protests against the casino instructions, will also give an adequate amount of time to the issue in the pulpit during Sunday sermon.

Although the State may have separated the church, the church is finding it hard pressed to separate from the state.

Both religious conservatives and religious liberals have come together on the issue of casino construction in the Columbus area.

The proposed expansion is meant to possible avoid raising taxes within the next for years, and has therefore has become a hot button issue as it pertains to the gubernatorial debate and election as it is set for November.

The religious leaders behind the refusal of the casino expansion are very influential in the community. The United Methodist Bishop; Bruce Ough, and the pastor of the World Harvest Church; Rod Parsley, are joining forces in the community in order to express their disapproval of the casino initiative.

The Learn and Earn initiative, which has become the title of the plan to expand casinos into Columbus, hold that the intentions behind constructing casinos in the State are beneficial to the educational system which would benefit from the revenue produced by the casinos.

Ough and Parsley intend to expose the veil that the casino proposal is hiding behind. It is their contention that the by living under the guise that the casinos are being constructed to allow for scholarship opportunities distorts the issue. The slot-machines would open the door for a  fully functional gambling operation in Ohio.

The religious organizations involved believe that the government should be accountable to explain to the public exactly how they intend to "expand" the casino industry in Ohio, and the deprecations that this would have on the general community. Until then, Parsley and Ough will continue their protest of the Learn and Earn initiative.
