Missouri Locked in
Video Casino Debate
Laundromats all over the great state
of Missouri are under suspicion of being apart of a dark illegal
gambling ring. These Laundromats aren't modern day speak easies
filled with low class thugs, and the casino games in question are
Texas Hold 'em or five card stud.
The Laundromats aren't the only ones
harboring the controversial video casinos that offer bored patrons
a chance to play their hand. Bars, truck stops, and fraternal
organizations are apart of the seedy conspiracy that is causing a
stir among community members in Jefferson City Missouri.
Video casino games are a tricky
subject when it comes to determining their position where the law
is concerned. It is common knowledge that casino gambling is
restricted among in the state, there are several arcade games that
proliferate the Missouri river. Senator John Loudon, who is an
avid opposer of gambling, wants to restrict these video poker and
video slot machines that allow patrons the possibility to win
money.
The idea of arresting business owners
away to jail for having video casinos in there buildings doesn't
sit well with member of the community. Other senators do not agree
with Loudon harsh interpretation of the law. Several members of
the Senate have suggested regulation that will allow the devices
to be used for nonprofit groups.
If gambling opponents want machines
banned, there will have to be a compromise. Due to the fact that
the video slots already exist there is much resistance to the law
stripping the machines out from under the owners.
It is very hard to even pin the term
"illegal" on the casino games which do not allow for a great deal
of pay out. The small scale winnings are hardly worth arguing
about. However, the moral determent posed by the machines could
possibly be the reasoning behind opponents of the video casinos
support.
Loudon holds that these casino devices
do not generate any tax revenue and that alone would be enough to
shut them down. Also, the video casinos give an outlet from
gambling addicts who have been banned from actual legal casinos.
The problem ,however, does not seem to be as simple as the picture
Loudon paints.
