Online Casinos Take
the Focus in the Senate
Sept. 8-06
Bill
Frist, the Senate majority leader, has shown a great deal of support for the
proposed prohibition of online casinos as outlined by the HR4411 Bill. He has
made the issues surrounding the electronic casinos a top priority for senate
discussion.
The
Senate, however, may have much bigger fish to fry considering the limited amount
of time between now and the November elections. After all, only twenty working
days remain before the elections are to take place according to the senatorial
calendar.
It is
both the Senate's and the House of Representatives hope that a decision will be
agreed upon by the 9th of October, which is also the adjournment date.
Frist
believes that internet gambling threatens families because it provides a means
for which the teenage population may become addicted to gambling. Although
gambling is not a physically addictive subject and other materials are that will
be allowed to continue their participation in the free market that comprises the
US, online casinos are still under scrutiny by the senate.
Those
who oppose online gambling as it exists today, reference the Wire Act of 1961
that prohibited the use of telephones to conduct any gambling related activity.
The medium of the internet is far more elusive than the telephone however, since
there are other means by which to access it. One does not need wires to get on a
webpage due to advents such as the wireless internet.
Although the Senate wishes to come to a decision on the matter as soon as
possible, the amount that is on the agenda could mean a longer wait than what
was previously anticipated.
