Canadian School Board
Says No to Casino Funds
Sept. 28-06
A Canadian school
board has decided to find an alternative means by which to raise
money for the school system. The use of funds provide by the
casino industry has weighed to heavily on the morality in the
community.
Although there are
many for the proposed re-routing of funds as they pertain to
education and child development. The school board is wary to do
anything which may jeopardize the integrity of the revenue the
educational system is receiving in Calgary.
The decision to find
a new means to raise fund would translate in to a $2 million loss
which, as the chairwoman for the school districts board of
trustees has so aptly put, makes the decision "business as usual".
The community is
concerned that although the funds provided by casinos may be
charitable, they may not be fair to the community at large.
Perhaps the
"morality" issue however, is far more practical than those
opposing casino funding would have the Canadian school board to
belief. The Catholic church has threatened to strip away the
Catholic designation of many of the high schools in the area due to
their acceptance of financial support from gambling organizations.
School board
officials have projected a decision to be made on the issue this
upcoming November however, until they release a report, the
school's in the district will be permitted to draw their funds
from where ever they like.
Nearly half of the
money that is raised for the school district in Calgary comes from
the casino cash cow. Currently the only method the school can see
to replace is the help of volunteers.
This will no doubt
prove difficult for the school system who has recently been thrust
between a rock and a hard place on the issue of funding.
Prior to the pressure
for change, underprivileged students were given the opportunity
to be involved in the arts a sporting activities which due to lack
of funding would not have been possible to provide.
