Casino Addiction
Possibly Connected to Dopamine

Medical research is
finding that there maybe a connection between dopamine
agonist and casino gambling addiction. The Parkinson's Disease
Society is conducting research under the direction of Dr. Kieran
Breen in hopes to pin point the reasons behind the suggested
connection
Behaviorally the
connections between casino gambling and the dopamine released in
the brain, is that dopamine is involved in the apprehension of
reward and positive mood when given to patients.
The drugs being used
for patients suffering from the degenerative Parkinson's Disease
could possibly conducive to creating gambling addicts among senior
citizens being treated for the ailment
The research
yielded by Dr. Breen has shown that 10% of the Parkinson's
patients being subjected to dopamine treatments develop a problem
involving increase urges associated with casino game play.
Many of the senior
citizens involved in the study went from spending a nominal amount
weekly to splurging hundreds and in some cases thousands on online
casino site, dog tracks, scratch cards, and horse racing. One
extreme case involved a 71 year old man who lost over 100,000
dollars in casino related gambling.
If the research finds
solid connections between the dopamine present in the body and the
propensity to become addicted to casino games, there door could be
open to find the means by which to cure patience of the
psychological disorder.
Medical researchers
are changing treatments of there patients as not to contribute to
the surge of casino addiction among the elderly. However, tests
and research will still continue in hopes to get closer to finding
a way to prevent more cases of the psychological disorder.
