The United Kingdom Fights Online Casino Prohibition
UK has lifted long
held restrictions whose purpose was to limit the amount of
advertisement geared toward the game industry. This move would
most likely be of little consequence to the United Kingdom were
there not the possibility of online gambling restrictions in the
U.S.
If the Senate passes
legislation that will prohibit the kind of payouts used by online
casino sites, there very well could be an uncharacteristic boom in
the amount of gambling related ads on the U.K. tele. It
certainly would be a wise initiative by British based casino
servers whose stock would be directly effected by ant-gambling
legislature.
Sites like
Sportsbetting.com, PartyGaming, and 888.com are listed on the
London stock market however, they earn half their profits
from players in the United States.
The shift in both
nations attitudes to the increasing popular issue of legalized
gambling will lead to a gaming industry boom in the United Kingdom
if current trends stay the same. After all, the U.K. gaming
industry rakes in about 50 billion pounds a year. The industry is
not likely to slip away from the U.S. market without having
another game plan.
There will no doubt be some concern as to the advertisements
target demographic. For example, ads which seemed to cater to
children would most likely be un-permissible. Parliaments
current suspension of gambling restriction does not exclude rules
of thumb that should be adhered to in order to promote honest
business practices.
Also, due to the lack of direct returns as a result of television
ads, it will be difficult to decipher how much of an effect the
television campaigns will have. It is comforting however to gaming
executives that another course of action is possible in the face
of legislative moves that could harm the business.
