Online Casino Reform May not Include Penn
The city of Brotherly may be left out of
government law making when it comes to
gambling reform. John Perzal, the speaker of the House, has called
on the Senate to create a unified front on the issue. The reform,
which stands to completely prohibit the existence of online
casinos, has been a hot bead issue for the past couple of months.
Pennsylvania
Governor, Edward G. Rendell, is currently absent from the Senate,
and because he opposes the gambling reform initiative passed by
the house in March, Perzel feels this is a perfect opportunity for
a decision to be made. Perzel is taking Rendell's absence as
apathy on the issue of online casino dismantling.
Rendell however has
been more than clear about his position on the topic and feels the
Senate have been merely stalling till the end of the recess to
make a definitive decisions on the issue. This is of course
disturbing to the governor who has been asked many times to make
his stance on reform clear.
The online casino issue is only a
facet of the reform package. Much of the political initiative is
geared toward restricting and limiting the political association
with the gaming industry. The reforms wish to reduce the amount of
government officials who own or take part in business with both
land based and online casino businesses.
Although there has been much hoopla
made over the expediting of decision making in the senate, It is
doubtful that the pressure being applied by Perzel is any more
than an attempt to save political face . What is certain, is that
the fate of online casinos hang in the balance as the Senate gears
up for their fall session.
