Hawaiian Casinos Could Decrease Violence
Although Hawaii has no official
casinos, dog tracks, or slot parlors, gambling addiction has
become a serious problem among natives there. The problem
according to psychologists is in the attitude taken toward
gambling on the island.
Culturally there is very little
resistance to the institution of gambling among Samoans. This of
course has lead to a great deal of trouble with the United States
laws against gambling. The natives in Hawaii do not require a
casino in order to place their bets.
The government has increased the
funding in initiatives that reduce the amount of violence on the
island, however the problem of gambling addiction is far more
prolific and has received far less attention.
Much of the violence on the Big Island
of Oahu springs out of some sort of gambling related altercation.
Gamblers anonymous meetings are held on many of the island as a
means to deter natives from going on excessive binges.
Currently the restrictions on casino
related games are, in many people's opinion, the cause of the wide
spread propensity toward addiction. Due to the fact that natives
have no gaming facilities to go to and are restricted to gamble
legally, gambling has all the appeal of forbidden fruit.
Some members of the community believe
that legalized casinos would allow for an organized and less
dangerous venue for Hawaiians to gamble. Not only would a casino
in Hawaii provide entertainment through a medium that was
culturally accepted by the natives, it would also allow the
government to benefit from the tax dollars generated by the
facility.
Although many communities think that
legalized gambling would only hurt Hawaiian culture, almost
every community wishes to combat the problem of gambling
addiction.
The Aloha state hopes to maintain
paradise while upholding the integrity of the people who lie there
