Gambling Addiction
spins New Zealand woman out of Control
A New Zealand native,
Christine Keenan, lost over six million dollars gambling at a
Dunedin casino. As if this wasn't tragic enough, all the money she
lost was not her own. Keenan, who suffers from gambling addiction,
stole $470,000 from her employers before loosing it all.
The Dunedin casino officials could possibly be suspended due to their
facilitation of Ms. Keenan. Rather than identifying Christine as
an addict, this casino provided her with free food and drink while
she gambled away her entire lively hood. At one point during her
binge, Keenan was single handedly responsible for 10% of the
casino's yearly profit.
As
she ate and
drank on the house, Keenan lost the money from her divorce
settlement, her inheritance, and her home mortgage. This was of course in addition
to the money stolen from her work place.
Ironically, Keenan
worked for an accounting firm, T.D. Scott & Co, as a
co-coordinator for the Institute of Directors. Due to her alcohol
abuse, gambling
dependencies, and the money she stole from the firm, the very
mention of Keenan's name has become taboo at T.D. Scott .
Christine has lost all support from family and friends and will
have to recover from this blow alone
Currently, Keenan is
attending AA meetings and receiving counseling in addition to
serving her sentence of house arrest. Counselors who are aiding
her in her struggle with addiction claim that she is making great
stride despite the lack of social support she is facing. Keenan's
sentence includes a life long ban from any facilities containing
gambling devices. Also, as apart of her probation she will not be
allowed to visit any online gambling sites. Keenan's ex-husband
and children continue to endure a strained relationship with the
convict. It is doubtful that her status of life will ever be the
same, but Keenan still commits to changing and ridding herself of
addiction.
