Disgruntled Casino Workers Protest in Sydney
There is no wrath like a casino worker scorned. Sydney is facing
the problem of disgruntled casino employees. According to the
workers in Star City casino, they are not being paid adequate
wages for the time and effort they put in. The workers have gone
so far as to protest for better pay.
Casino management has been forced between a rock and a hard place.
The large income attained by Star Casino surely puts the company
in a position to comply with their employees wishes; but will
they? The protests seem to be wearing the company down. The
original offer dropped was a half per cent raise over the next for
years. After some heavy debate, and a few threats, the offer
raised to 11%.
The union however, is asking for a yearly raise of 4.5%. This, in
their opinion, is the minimum needed to preserve a viable quality
of life for the countless chefs, limo drivers, and security guards
that tend to the casino.
Star City's move to raise the offer over 10% clearly communicates
that something needs to be done about the wages as they exist
today. Employees are raising a fuss because their pay scale is not
keeping up with the changing economy. It is their perception that
this problems is one that should have been solved several years
ago.
Management at the casino was quick to respond to the demands of
their employees, no doubt recognizing the magnitude of their
negligence concerning wage conditions.
Peter Grimshaw, the spokesman for Star City casino, claims the 11%
offer is more than fair. He added that bonuses would be offered as
an initiative to increase costumer service in the casino.
Employees do not share in Grimshaw's optimism when it comes to
their employers proposed recompense. It is only generous when the
amount of years that they have gone without decent wages isn't
considered. It is the workers' contention that the proposed rate
of 4.5% per year be implemented. This, for them, is not a luxury,
but a necessity in the changing economy of Sydney.
Management currently is standing by the proposal. There is no
certainty who will be the first to budge in the Star City casino
controversy. The protests do impact the profits of the casino a
great deal. Patrons who stay in the hotel areas become disturbed
and irritated by the clambering of disgruntled employees asking
for increased wages.
It may be wise for the casino owners to give the workers their
requested wage and write the expense off as noise control. The
situation is currently being further negotiated.
