Korean Casino War Sparked by Payout Dispute
Senior Citizens in Korea are up in arms about casinos in the
area. Korea is being nicknamed the "Gambling Republic". It is
this association with the vice that has citizens concerned that
Korea is loosing the head way its gained as a developing country.
The riled senior citizens are doing more than writing petitions
against the expansion and construction of casinos is their
country. Elderly in the country are actively protesting the
development of casinos.
Sixty senior members of the community have banded together to form
the National Council for Upgrading. The Council held a meeting at
the Kukje Hotel. The meeting outlined a plan of action against
gambling in Korea. The purpose of the NCU is to eradicate the
institutions that promote addictive and harmful gambling.
The group also suggested joining up with other organizations in
Korea to increase influence. For the council it is more than just
a moral issue. Their patriotism and need to preserve self image
and national pride.
The government feels that this will cause even further economic
polarization. The issue of legalized gambling has lead to a
complete split in opinions concerning economic policy in Korea.
Citizen's who are for the lucrative casino establishments are at
odds with organizations like the NCU. This is bad for the current
financial plan in Korea. It is the existence of the casinos that
increased the rate of financial development in Korea.
The very integrity that the council is trying to maintain, in some
part is due to the casinos contributing revenue to the Korean
government. The current controversy concerning slot-machine payout
rates is being used by the council to spring board their case
against gambling in Korea.
The issue will be a bone of contention for both the government and
anti-gambling organization for some time.
