Casino Expansion Ruffles Feathers
Ohio is torn
apart over the possible gambling expansion set to be decided on in
November. The casino initiative in Ohio is no different than the
many that are currently sweeping the country in the wake of ever
changing legal policies.
The illegality of
gambling casinos has certainly made news headlines more than once
within the past three months. In Ohio anti-gambling movements are
becoming more active in their approach. Senator George Voinovich,
a republican from Cincinnati, is making it clear that casino
expansion is not what he believes is right for the Midwest state
of Ohio.
Voinovich is
producing a media campaign through raising money, in order to
paint an evil face on the gambling industry. He wishes to combat
the Earn and Learn foundation. Earn and Learn has poured money
into advertisement that is pro-gambling expansion. Voinovich feels
that the marketing on the issue has been grossly one sided.
Through lobbying
religious and social service groups, he hopes to create enough
capital to fund a marketing campaign that will at least match that
of the organization for the gambling expansion.
The constitutional
amendment, slated to reach the ballot in Nov.7, has been
petitioned against by several of the organizations from which
Voinovich was soliciting help. Over 620,000 signatures have been
collected to protest the possible legalization of gambling
initiatives in Ohio. This has given Voinovich fuel to continue
forming his commercials against gambling expansion.
If his marketing plan
does not work and voters give the ok to the amendment on November
7., there will be four casino sites built in Ohio. The expansion,
although relatively small, is extremely controversial to members
of the community. Voinovich will endeavor to make certain that
this amendment doesn't move forward.
