Gambling Addicts to Be Given Life Ban from Casinos
The Missouri Gaming Commission has
said no to the alternate deterrent for gambling addicts to ban
themselves from casinos for two years in lieu of punishment.
The commission feels that only a life
time ban will serve the community as a whole. A two year ban would
simply allow gambling addicts to re-enter casinos in Missouri and
begin their spiral downwards all over again.
Many of the individuals suffering from
some sort of gambling related disorder agree with the gaming
commission's decision. Over 10,000 people in the sate have placed
themselves on the list to be banned for life from casinos and
other gambling facilities.
Punishment for returning to the
buildings after being banned from casinos could permit the
gambling addicts to be brought up on criminal charges. If a bet
was placed by an individual on the list, they could be brought up
with trespassing.
The argument for the two year ban, is
that more addicts will most likely participate if there wasn't the
permanent stamp on their exile from Missouri casino floors
Although this may be true, the
commission is not interested in merely solving the problem for a
pr-determined length of time. The commission understands the
necessity in a life ban, which is not only beneficial for the
individual suffering from gambling addiction, but also to the
facility itself.
There have been many instances in the
past where casino patrons who were gambling addicts sued the
casino because they feel that management has enabled their
condition. If the proposed two year ban came into effect, gambling
casinos couldn't even plead ignorance to the patrons ailment. They
would have record of them admitting to being addicts two years
prior.
The decision to hold stead fast to the
life ban is better for all parties involve. It insures that
addicts will not backslide possibly falling into financial ruin,
and it protects the casino from unnecessary litigation.
