Adult Arcades Accused of Illegal Gambling

Adult game rooms in Broward county Florida are falling under legal scrutiny. These facilities are geared toward retired senior citizens and are regarded by many as the "Chucked E. Cheese for the elderly". The gaming facilities involve several electronic devices that are modeled after Casino Games. Instead of money, the players receive tokens or tickets they can trade in for prizes.

Gale Fontain, owner of the Tropicana Rec Room in Pompano, argues that these facilities do nothing more than provide entertainment for retirees. Her opponents however, paint a different picture. They claim that these "innocent games" are nothing more than illegal slots-machines. The decision as to whether these game rooms are illegal has been left up to the respective counties that house them.

Under the "Chuck E Cheese Law" this type of gaming facility is permitted as long as the games themselves incorporate some sot of skill as a means to win. In other words, it can not completely rely odds. Despite the law many municipalities have decided to ban adult game rooms from their respective areas.

Broward county is one of the regions where these game rooms are not permitted. Fontain has been brought up on charges for her involvement with the rec room. She is fighting her court battle tooth and nail, claiming that these charges are unfounded considering previous Federal and State rulings. The Neighboring county of Palm Beach not only permits these adult arcades, but also is home to the Greyhound dog track.

Many operators of similar facilities are waiting with baited breathe in Broward for the results of Fontains court case. If she is prosecuted many of them will more than likely begin closing down their game rooms in order to prevent legal action being taken.

This will no doubt upset the patrons of such places like The Tropicana Rec Room. These arcades have developed a fervent following of senior citizens who take advantage of the social atmosphere provided by  the facilities. If the court decides that the entertainment provided by this kind of game room is in fact gambling, their will be many retirees displaced from what has become one of their favorite past times.
